P2 Certification Course

Mission

P2 Pilot Certification & Mentorship

Full-Spectrum Paragliding Training in the Columbia River Gorge

$3,000

Learning to paraglide is about much more than earning a P2 rating. Our goal is to help you develop the skills, judgment, confidence, and community connections to build a long and rewarding life in the sport.

At Hood River Paragliding, we take a high-touch, individualized approach to training. We go well beyond the minimum requirements for a USHPA P2 rating, with extensive ground handling, supervised flying, focused ground school, exposure to a wide variety of flying environments, and continued mentorship as you progress beyond certification.

We aren’t simply trying to get you a rating. We’re trying to help you become a pilot.

What Makes Our Training Different

Extensive Flight Training

The USHPA P2 rating has minimum flight and flying-day requirements, but we don’t view those requirements as a finish line.

Our goal is to give you substantial experience beyond the minimum as you develop the skills and judgment necessary to fly independently. We work toward getting students experience across more than the required seven flying days and expose them to a broad range of conditions and environments.

Your progression is based on skill and readiness—not simply checking boxes.

Strong Ground-Handling & Landing Fundamentals

We place an unusually strong emphasis on the skills that form the foundation of good paragliding.

Students spend extensive time at the training hill and dune developing:

  • Ground handling and active glider control
  • Launch technique and decision-making
  • Brake and weight-shift control
  • Wind awareness
  • Aborted-launch skills
  • Approach planning
  • Flare technique
  • Energy management
  • Landing dynamics
  • Precision and restricted landing fields

These skills are practiced repeatedly throughout your training so that they become a reliable foundation for everything that comes later.

High-Touch Early Training

The beginning of your paragliding journey deserves focused attention.

During the early stages of training, we prioritize one-on-one or two-student-to-one-instructor instruction whenever possible. This allows us to spend significant time developing your ground-handling skills, preparing you for your first flights, and building good habits from the beginning.

As your skills and independence develop, we progressively expand your flying opportunities and responsibilities.

Full-Spectrum Flying Experience

Paragliding is a diverse sport, and we believe students should experience that diversity during their training.

As conditions and your progression allow, we aim to expose every student to a broad spectrum of flying, including:

  • Light-wind mountain flying and launches from higher terrain
  • Dune soaring and higher-wind ground handling
  • Inland flying
  • Coastal flying
  • Restricted and challenging landing fields
  • Different launch, landing, wind, and terrain environments

Each environment teaches something different. Our goal is to help you develop the adaptability and judgment to understand how your decisions change as the conditions change.

Ground School & Pilot Decision-Making

Good paragliding isn’t just about controlling a wing. It’s about making good decisions.

Our ground school combines practical instruction with the concepts and philosophy that underpin safe, sustainable progression in paragliding.

Topics include:

  • Meteorology and understanding the atmosphere
  • Site assessment
  • Weather and wind interpretation
  • Risk assessment and mitigation
  • Launch and landing decisions
  • Airspace and flying regulations
  • Equipment and wing selection
  • Flight planning
  • Progression and personal limits
  • Recognizing when conditions are inappropriate
  • Developing a conservative and sustainable approach to flying

Ground school is provided through a combination of in-person instruction and Zoom sessions, allowing us to spend meaningful time on the concepts that are difficult to learn simply by being in the air.

Our goal is not just to teach you how to fly, but how to think like a pilot.

A Community You Can Grow With

Paragliding is a community sport, and becoming part of a strong flying community is an important part of becoming a capable pilot.

The Columbia River Gorge has an incredible community of pilots with decades of combined experience. We want our students to become comfortable within that community and develop relationships with pilots they can continue learning from long after their formal training is finished.

Throughout your training, we’ll help you:

  • Meet experienced local pilots
  • Understand local flying culture and site etiquette
  • Become comfortable participating in the Gorge flying community
  • Build relationships with other pilots
  • Find people to fly with as you progress
  • Develop a network of experienced pilots you can learn from

Getting your P2 shouldn’t mean leaving your instructor and figuring everything out alone.

Continued Pilot Mentorship

Our relationship with students doesn’t end when they earn their P2.

Paragliding is a lifelong progression, and we want to remain a resource as you continue developing.

If you’re learning to fly at a new site, traveling somewhere you’ve never flown before, trying to figure out your next step, or simply have a question about something you’re seeing in the sky, we’re happy to be a sounding board.

That might mean helping you find experienced pilots at a new destination, connecting you with local flying communities, talking through a progression decision, or helping you think through a particular flying situation.

The goal is to give you a foundation and a support network that continues long after your rating is earned.

Your P2 Journey

Your training begins with the fundamentals.

We start with a combination of ground handling, tandem flights, and ground school, building your understanding and control of the paraglider before progressing to your first solo flights.

As your skills develop, we gradually introduce radio-guided flights and increasingly complex flying environments.

Because paragliding is completely dependent on weather and conditions, there isn’t a rigid sequence that works for every student. We adapt your training to the conditions and to your individual progression.

Some days may be spent flying. Other days may be spent entirely on the ground developing skills that will make your future flights safer and more productive.

We strongly encourage an immersive approach to training whenever possible. An intensive period of training allows each lesson to build naturally on the one before it, while we also work with students who need a more flexible schedule.

What You’re Signing Up For

This is not a course designed to get you through the minimum requirements as quickly as possible.

It’s an investment in learning to paraglide well.

Your $3,000 P2 program includes:

  • Comprehensive P2 instruction
  • Extensive supervised flight training
  • Ground-handling instruction
  • Launch and landing training
  • Restricted landing field training
  • Tandem instruction during the early stages
  • In-person ground school
  • Zoom ground-school sessions
  • Training across multiple flying environments
  • Inland and coastal flying opportunities
  • Dune training and ground-handling development
  • Individualized progression
  • Significant 1:1 or 2:1 instruction during early training
  • Guidance on equipment and pilot progression
  • Integration into the local paragliding community
  • Continued pilot mentorship after certification

Our goal is to leave you with much more than a P2 card.

We want you to leave your training with strong fundamentals, meaningful flight experience, sound decision-making habits, an understanding of how to manage risk as you progress, and a community of pilots you can continue learning and flying with.

The first lessons

Paragliding lessons at Cape Kiwanda are an amazing way for students to dial in basic flights in a safe environment. After a handful of lessons here, we are able to take advantage of the amazing flying inland and all over the Oregon coast.
